25 years of asking what if

Using real memories—from grand proposals to tiny everyday "wow" moments, three incredible young artists from Creative Youth Network help We The Curious celebrate our 25th birthday in style.

As part of our long-term strategic partnership with Creative Youth Network (CYN), we have commissioned three alumni from the Creative Futures programme. Their new artworks celebrate people’s memories from the last 25 years of We The Curious’ history.

This unique collaboration dives deep into our archive to celebrate every person who has been part of the We The Curious story.

Since we opened in 2000, 6.6 million people have visited We The Curious – our story is as much about Bristol and its people as it is about us.

Maya Albagaloo

Hello I’m Maya, a multidisciplinary artist and explorer with a tactile, hands-on approach to visual storytelling. I enjoy combining art practices in printmaking, textiles, sculpture with film and animation, often letting the idea dictate the medium.

I’m inspired by the intersection of science and artistic expression, experimenting with processes and outcomes which can reconnect us to our environment and self through a childlike curiosity.

Documentation, collecting and archiving has become an important part of my art practice and a way to bridge nostalgic, spur of the moment expression with present-day reflection, often revealing new meaning through, collaging or editing.

In the spirit of We The Curious’ nature, my artwork Trails combines layered illustrations, archival collages, and creative prompts that encourage curiosity for all ages.

I hope this is an opportunity to question our relationship with the city and nature, inspiring readers to observe, reflect, and reimagine how these worlds can coexist.

Orii

Orii, the creative identity of illustrator and storyteller Ifeoluwa Afolabi, explores play, colour, and curiosity through joyful, imaginative worlds that invite people to pause and reflect. Her work blurs the line between the real and the whimsical, encouraging connection through discovery and wonder.

Rooted in storytelling and emotional depth, Orii’s illustrations often take interactive or tactile forms, celebrating curiosity as a bridge between people and ideas.

Through vibrant imagery and layered meaning, she aims to spark moments of joy, reflection, and play — reminding viewers that there’s always more to explore if you just look a little closer.

Hidden Wonders

Hidden Wonders is an illustrated mural by Orii inspired by memories, questions, and moments from We The Curious’ 25-year history. Designed as an immersive “hide and seek” experience, the piece invites visitors to look closely and uncover tiny stories and characters woven into a vibrant, detailed world.

Each hidden element draws from We The Curious’ past — from funny visitor questions to moments of discovery — celebrating the curiosity and imagination that shape the space.

Through playful imagery and layered storytelling, Hidden Wonders explores the shared wonder of looking, learning, and connecting through curiosity.

Spacetime

How do we know that anything has ever happened? Does memory take physical form outside of the corporeal? Might a building hold more echoes than a human ever could?

Spacetime explores memories of We The Curious’ past in the form of poetry. From Explore @ Bristol, to the stillness of 2020, millions have passed through these walls and been touched in return.

It is these interactions that Spacetime hopes to capture, giving power to that which can no longer be seen, and weaving the past into Bristol’s material future.

From Womb to Worm

For awe-filled babes of earth

much like you and I,

weaning is impossible.

Though we are to die, our

roots will ever-grow:

they’ll touch, and twist, and

slip, and sew ideas

that t h r e a d b a r e bits

of synapses will ache to know

—--------------------------------

From womb to worm was inspired by the very essence of We The Curious: exploration, discovery, and the human thirst for knowledge. We The Curious shares this message with Bristol and beyond, to people of all ages… and perhaps some animals too.

Bird Flight

Sparrow legs

step, tentative

Hold paper to

the light

Touch fleecy sock

to laminate

Fling sticky hands

to plastic

Take birth in their stride

—--------------------------------

Bird flight was inspired by the many young children who had their formative exploratory experiences at We The Curious’ Toddler Takeovers.

soon we will be four

—--------------------------------

Sonogram features We The Curious’ famous womb room, remembered and beloved by many who shared their memories with us. We can imagine soon-to-be parents exploring the exhibit, getting the chance to see how their baby is developing inside their own womb - and even telling their children that they are going to be big-sibs!

Lineage

Threw my cap into the harbour

(all things trickle down)

Watched your wonder

charge the water

(all things trickle down)

Amberglow glazing your father

(all things trickle down)

New blood runs & love becomes

All things trickle down.

—--------------------------------

Lineage is a special piece inspired by Bernard Cripps, a trustee of the Exploratory during the development of Millennium Square. Bernard’s family have gone on to stay impressively entwined with We The Curious throughout its 25 years; Geoff Gollop, Bernard’s son-in-law, is still a trustee of We The Curious today! Geoff and his wife, Bernice, fondly remember their children being volunteered for the Millennium Square fountain switch on; their daughter playing with the water exhibits as a child; and, many moons later, getting married in the planetarium! Now, Geoff and Bernice enjoy taking their Granddaughter to explore We The Curious, continuing the legacy that Bernard helped to build.

Astronauts

Amongst such splendour

(supernovas,

shooting stars

et cetera)

I could see only you,

doused in space-light,

hurtling

gently

into my arms

—--------------------------------

Astronauts was inspired by the many couples who get married at We The Curious’ planetarium - and the people who met their future partners there too! From proposals in the Rainbow Constellation, to everlasting meet-cutes in the Planetarium, the childlike wonder of We The Curious has fostered love for 25 years.

Tear-stained

Let swathes of gone-sound

heal your bare-skin brick;

rapt hands wash over sodden

bones, trace lifetimes,

oil-slick, down your spine;

carve wrinkles into worn

sandstone.

You have our mercy; rest.

—----------------------------------------

Tear-stained talks to the We The Curious venue during its periods of rest, both in the lockdown and after it suffered significant water damage in a 2022 fire. The building was originally a railway goods shed, and then a car park, so we can imagine that it found the silence to be strange!

School Trip

Looking at my work up here

is really pretty cool. My hot

air b’loon got sent to space

and that’s not even all!

I got to hear a beating heart

up right close in the flesh

When i get home

I’ll tell my mum

I’m now a scientist!

—----------------------------------------

School Trip honours the rite-of-passage day out to We The Curious that many now-adults in the South West look back on with warmth. Some professional scientists really did get their first experiences at ‘@Bristol’ during the 00s and 10s.

Memory Discarnate

Hush.

Listen close, or

you might miss the

whisper of

humans

on

      the

wind

—----------------------------------------

Memory Discarnate asks you to consider the fragility of collective memory. Projects such as this one, celebrating We The Curious’ 25th Birthday, make tangible our communal spirit and the history of our city.

More on the 25th

In 2025, as part of our 25th birthday celebrations, we invited the people of Bristol to share their memories, photos, videos, and stories of We The Curious. The response was overwhelming, with contributions capturing everything from early school visits and Planetarium “wow moments” to personal life stories created at our much beloved science center.
