Building works 2026

We’re doing a spot of essential maintenance on our roof from January to March 2026, and we’ll be open as usual throughout, so do come and play!

Here's a bit more info on what’s happening:
Various bits and bobs on our roof are getting a spot of well-earned TLC with a big old programme of works to help keep our historic building in tip-top shape. (We were built in 1906 – our Grade 2 listing building is an old railway goods shed and was part of Brunel’s Great Western network.)

It’ll include a new felt roof and insulation, associated drainage works and we’ll be installing some new roof lights too. Yay!

And if you’re looking to visit:
Fret not, we’re not closed – we’re open as usual!

You won’t see much of an impact during your visit with us, other than spotting a couple of scaffolding towers inside along our picnic space and North Gallery, along with external scaffolding on the Anchor Road side of the building.

A very small number of exhibits may be out of action during the works (Jan-Mar), but there’s still heaps to do all across the venue – do chat to any of our team, and they can direct you to some brilliant activities, exhibits and hidden treasures.

We're open Tuesday to Sunday, 10am-5pm during term time or every day, 10am to 5pm during Bristol school holidays and on bank holidays.
